Although about 27% of the population have both the genes that are necessary to have Psoriasis, only about 4% of the population are ever affected with the psoriatic lesion symptoms.
Psoriasis is the cause of great discomfort for those people, and especially for those with severe Psoriasis symptoms. For some, it may even result in hospitalization due to the inflammation of the lesions affecting the tissues just as if they were burns instead.
The actual cause of Psoriasis is not absolutely clear in all cases, although it is well accepted that there is an underlying genetic component, comprising dominant and recessive genes and when those genes are triggered, the immune system produces an excessive number of skin cells.
Psoriasis is therefore an auto immune condition which is incurable – but it can be put into long-term remission where there are just no symptoms. We attempt to clear up Psoriasis symptoms through the use of topical and oral medicines and dealing with the “triggers”.
Psoriasis Causes:
There are four Primary triggers that cause Psoriasis lesions which include:
- Koebner Phenomenon – injury to the skin from bites, cuts, operations, abrasions etc
- Systemic Infections – viral or bacterial infections eg. Tonsilitis, Shingles etc
- Stresses – Anxiety, worry, and other frustrations of life
- Interaction with drugs – certain drugs such as steroids, lithium, anti malarials, anti-inflamatories, some blood pressure medicines (Beta Blockers) and antibiotics can act as Primary Triggers at the outset of taking them, and often just by the act of ceasing taking them
Secondary triggers – There are thousands of Secondary Psoriasis Triggers which are involved in aggravating the condition, some of which apply to most sufferers while others only play a role in a select number of sufferers due to their genetic makeup.
These Secondary Triggers are related to issues such as diet, lefestyle, chemical exposure, hormones, drugs, and many other area. At your consultation one of our Practitioners can help you to isolate which ones relate to you .
Diet and stress play a very significant part in causing Psoriasis lesions as these factors act as secondary triggers which are related to histamine release, blood groups and acidity factors.
Is Psoriasis contageous?: ….. No, it is not.
A long time ago people did not understand Psoriasis and the sufferers were believed to have leprosy, a curable viral condition characterised by red lesions and shedding skin and other tissues. The similarity to Psoriasis resulted in many people with Psoriasis being placed into Leper colonies, and not surprisingly, they developed leprosy as well. Most skin conditions are not contageous, and Psoriasis lesions are no exception – they are just purely an immune response to internal imbalances.
Types of Psoriasis
There are at least 10 Psoriasis types and they all have different symptoms:
- Plaque Psoriasis(Chronic Psoriasis Vulgaris)

Is Psoriasis incurable ?
As it is a genetically-based condition, Psoriasis, is incurable, but we target the clearing up the skin lesions and assisting the patient to go into remission where the symptoms either do not appear or at least are manageable long term.
Psoriasis symptom treatment may take 6-12 weeks (more or less), depending on the severity of the condition, the length of time that the sufferer has been dealing with the lesions, and their ability to keep strictly to the protocol that we recommend for them.
Our protocols for the treatment of Psoriasis are based on clearing up symptoms using dietary advice and through the use of naturally-based topical and oral medicines such as ointments, creams, gels, lotions etc as well as targeted oral medicines, under the brand names of Dr Michaels and Seloderma, as well as some other brands, which assist in breaking the cycle from within.
Dr Michaels Scalp & Body Ointment, Dr Michaels Cleansing Gel and Dr Michaels Skin Conditioner are all available from our clinics for sale to residents of Sydney.
